Why we built it
Built for the people in front of the camera
At Chaos Created we produce podcasts, virtual events and videos. That work regularly puts a presenter or a guest in front of a camera, delivering to a script.
More often than not, that means reaching for a teleprompter, and the ones we tried were a frustration. The tools that worked well were locked behind expensive subscriptions — more than £10 a month, forever — and the rest just scrolled at a fixed speed and left whoever was presenting chasing the text. So we built the one we wanted.
Onwords follows the person reading, rather than making them keep pace with a machine. The speech recogniser is built into the app and runs on your own device, so it works offline, with no account and no subscription. It is the teleprompter we reach for now, on our own shoots — and as of this week, you can have it too.

Most teleprompters scroll at a fixed speed, so you spend the whole take keeping pace with a machine. Onwords listens instead, and moves the text to match you.
It follows your voice
Read at your own pace. The line you are on stays centred on screen, and the text scrolls to keep up with you.
It forgives you
Pause, stumble, ad-lib or skip a section. Onwords holds its place and picks you back up without missing a beat.
It handles two presenters
Assign lines to each presenter and Onwords tints them — pale yellow and pale blue — so a two-hander runs from one script, with no operator.
It stays on your machine
The speech recogniser is bundled inside the app and runs on your own processor. Nothing is uploaded, no audio is stored, and it all works offline.

A quiet microphone is lifted automatically, and the recogniser was trained on real-world speech, so it copes with distance and with accents.
