Why we built it
Made by people who film for a living
We produce podcasts and videos at Chaos Created, so we spend plenty of time in front of a camera reading from a script.
We tried the teleprompter tools out there and were not happy with any of them. The ones that worked well were locked behind expensive subscriptions, and the rest just scrolled at a fixed speed and left us chasing the text. So we built the one we wanted for ourselves.
Onwords uses the speech recognition built into Windows, running on your own device, so it works offline with no subscription to pay. It is the teleprompter we reach for now, and we are getting it ready to share.
How it works
A teleprompter that works the other way around
Most teleprompters scroll at a fixed speed, so you spend the whole take keeping pace with a machine. Onwords listens instead, and moves the text to match you.
It follows your voice
Read at your own pace. The line you are on stays centred on screen, and the text scrolls to keep up with you.

Pause, stumble, ad-lib or skip a section. Onwords holds its place and picks you back up without missing a beat.

Your scripts never leave your computer
Speech recognition runs entirely on your own machine, using the engine built into Windows. There is no cloud service, no API keys, no account and no internet connection. That matters when you are recording something under embargo, under NDA, or simply not finished yet.

1Paste your script
Drop your script into the box and click Start Prompting. Keep the original in your own document, ready to paste in again next time.
2Choose your microphone
Pick your actual microphone from the Mic dropdown by name. This single step solves nearly every “it is not hearing me” problem.
3Start reading
Click Start Listening and go. The line you are reading sits on the marker across the middle of the screen and follows your voice.

What is Onwords?
A teleprompter for Windows that follows your voice. You paste in your script, and as you read it aloud the app tracks where you are and scrolls to keep your current line centred on screen.
Do I need an account or an internet connection?
No to both. Onwords needs no account and no connection. Everything, including the speech recognition, runs on your own machine.
How does it know where I am in the script?
It listens through your microphone, converts your speech to text using Windows’ built-in recognition, and matches what it hears against your script to find your place. The highlight sits a word or two behind your voice, which is what keeps it steady enough to read from.
What if I stumble or skip ahead?
Nothing breaks. It needs only a few recognisable words to hold its place, so a fluffed line or a short aside will not throw it off. Jump to another section and it searches your whole script and catches up within a sentence or two.
When is it coming, and what do I need to run it?
Onwords is coming soon to the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and 11. All you will need is a microphone: there is no subscription to pay and no internet connection.
